What was he thinking??

Phoebe got this Melissa and Doug magnetic dress up dolls set for Christmas.

(Hers is a tiny bit different with different clothes and girls, but the same type of set.) She loves it and plays with it all the time. Yesterday Owen was messing with it and throwing the dolls around and making them battle or something crazy. This evening Phoebe was playing with the dolls and she was telling me the big story about how he was throwing them around. She was acting all outraged by it. She said "He was throwing them around! He thought they were his guys! What was he thinking???".

And, something odd about Phoebe when she plays with this set. She has trouble putting the shoes on the girls. She often asks me to help her put them on, and sometimes she tries to put them on and she gets them upside down, or on the wrong feet. Strange.

He fainted

I love listening to the kids when they are talking to each other (when they are talking nicely, that is). I just like to over hear the little things they say. Sometimes they are so sweet with each other, and sometimes very funny. Today on the way to the grocery store they were talking about alligators. I told them about a story I just saw on TV about a woman getting her face bitten by an alligator. Owen asked if there were any alligators around here. I said no, and Chloe said they had some in Florida. I said sometimes they get in pools there. Owen then said we better not talk about them anymore. Phoebe continued talking about alligators and Owen put his head over and closed his eyes. Then this conversation happened:

Phoebe: "Owen is asleep."

Owen: "I'm not asleep. I fainted."

Chloe and I laughed so hard. Apparently now the mere mention of alligators causes Owen to faint. Or fall asleep.

Mom, There's a bear in the fridge

For a few days now there has been a bear in the refrigerator. Danny and I commented on it and laughed about it. We assume Owen put it there for whatever reason. We left it there. This morning Phoebe said "Mom, there's a bear in the fridge". Still, we didn't take it out. (It doesn't surprise me that no one has taken it out and put it where it belongs. I've often wanted to conduct an experiment and leave something on the floor or counter, or wherever, and see if anyone ever picked it up. My bets are no. I seem to be the only one who picks up anything. I've tried to leave something for a few days but it drives me crazy and I eventually put it away.) I find odd things in odd places all the time. The bear isn't the only weird thing in my fridge. There is also a container of wax worms (for fish bait). Not so odd for around here though. Do you have anything weird in your fridge?

Happy April Fools Day!

April Fools Day has always been fun to me. When I was little we always played pranks on each other and I like to play around with the kids on April Fools Day. Crazy jokes were flying this morning before the kids went to school. I explained to Owen about it and he would say something like, "Mommy, there is a skunk on your head!", and I would reach for my head and gasp, then he'd say "Happy April Fools Day!". Chloe and I finally made him understand how it worked and that you just say "April Fool!".

In their lunches today I emptied out Cheetos bags and put in baby carrots. I put a hole in apples with a wooden spoon handle, then put a gummy worm in the hole. They loved it. Then for "dinner" I made them fish sticks and peas (really wafer cookies covered in peanut butter then crushed Wheaties and green Airheads rolled into balls). They thought that was hilarious too. (All these ideas were from Family Fun.)

They got report cards today of all days. Chloe got all As (not easy As in this year's class either!) and Owen did wonderful on his Kindergarten report card (they don't do letter grades in K, but they really have to know a lot!). I'm so proud of them both.

No jokes or report cards for Phoebe today, but here she is looking cute anyway.

Bathroom Humor

Phoebe made me laugh out loud last night. It was right before bed and she said she had to poop. She was wearing a nightgown so she wanted me to go to the bathroom with her to hold up her "dress". We wouldn't want a dress down in the toilet. She pooped, then hopped off the toilet to flush. She always looks at what she's flushing (and sometimes tells it bye bye). She looked at the poop, made a face, looked at me and said, "Isn't that terrible?". Oh, that cracked me up.

Another funny thing she's been doing, is when she gets mad or upset she will say "I'm about to cry!". At least she gives us a warning.

She can also be so sweet. She likes to rub my upper arms. Like when she's going to sleep, drinking from her sippy, for comfort, or just because. (Chloe rubbed my ear, so this is better than that at least.) I asked her yesterday why she likes to rub my arm and she said "Because I love you". That's good enough for me.

At least he didn't call 9-1-1

Owen has been sick the last couple days. He didn't go to school yesterday or today. This morning when I took Chloe to the bus stop (it's at the bottom of our hill), I left Owen and Phoebe in bed asleep with Danny. I was gone about 15 fifteen minutes because I talked to my friend at the bus stop after the bus ran (her daughter gets on the bus there too). When I got back, Owen was sitting on the couch drinking milk and watching cartoons. I asked how he felt, etc. Then I noticed the phone was on the couch next to him. I asked him if someone called. He said no. Then I looked at it and it still had my Mom and Dad's number on it (he didn't hang up). I was surprised he could call them because he never uses the phone. I asked what they were doing and he said they'd be here in a minute. Sure enough, I saw them pulling in. Mom said they were in bed and heard the phone ringing. This is was the conversation:

Mom: Hello?
Owen: (coughing)
Mom: Owen?
Owen: silence
Mom: Owen? Owen? Owen?
Owen: You need to come immediately.
Mom: What's wrong?
Owen: I'm worser. You better come now.
Mom: Where's your Mommy?
Owen: She took Chloe to school (Mom thought he meant to school, not the bus stop).
Mom: Where's your Daddy?
Owen: In bed.
Mom: We'll be right there.

Hilarious! If you know how Owen talks the immediately was like "immediatwee" which is so much funnier. When I asked Owen if he tried to wake up Danny, Owen said "I tried honking his nose but he didn't wake up". The whole thing just makes me laugh! Phoebe and Danny were sleeping away. Mom and Dad kind of thought it was all funny too. I made them waffles for breakfast for their early morning trip out to save Owen.

I took him to the dr. this morning and he has asthmatic bronchitis. He has an antibiotic, an inhaler (He's never used one before and said "Sweet!" when the dr. said he was going to give him one. He said he couldn't wait to show Chloe.), a steroid, and a cough medicine. He'll be home tomorrow too. Chloe didn't go to school yesterday because of her cough and asthma. She was better today and went to school. Hopefully Phoebe can stay well now. And hopefully Owen won't have to call for back up anytime soon.

A bedtime story by Phoebe

Last night Phoebe told us a bedtime (or bednight as she and Owen call it) story. It went like this:

Phoebe: Once upon a time, over in a meadow there was a turkey with her calf.

Chloe: (dying laughing) What were they doing?

Phoebe: Pooping

Oddest gift I've ever received

At church we have Secret Sisters that we buy for each month. For Valentine's Day my Secret Sister got me a box of chocolates. And a bottle brush.

Blame the sister

I know I've been blogging a lot, but I will forget things if I don't post them when I think of it.

Our computer is in a little room off from our kitchen. As I sat here on the computer, I heard the refrigerator door open. I said "Who is in the fridge?". Owen's voice said "Phoebe!".

He also just brought me a game piece we'd been looking for. He was smiling and proud that he found it. I asked where it was and he said "Under my bed. Phoebe put it there."

Groundhog Day confusion

Yesterday I was telling Owen about Groundhog's Day. I told him that if the groundhog came out and saw his shadow he'd be scared and say "Oh no!" and run back in his hole. I told him if he didn't see his shadow he'd say "Oh, happy day, happy day" and he'd run around. Then Owen said, "So the groundhog talks?".

I also told him he'd probably make a groundhog craft at school. He said he hated crafts. I asked him why and he said he hated cutting and glueing.

So, this morning we were talking about Groundhog's Day again and Owen said, "Well, I know the beaver saw his shadow".

The President as seen by Phoebe

Phoebe keeps bringing me a Pocahontas book and pointing to Pocahontas and saying "Barack Obama". I guess because she has darker skin. I finally understand why when we watched the Inauguration she kept saying she was looking for Barack Obama in Chloe's room. Chloe has a Pocahontas movie in her room that she often watches before she goes to sleep at night. She also says Pocahontas has a kangaroo. I told her no, it was a raccoon. To which she said, "Oh. I love raccoons."

She's learned something new

Phoebe's new thing is to shred paper. Into strips. All over the place. Maybe she's started doing this since all the scissors have disappeared.

This evening she made me glad we never have company. I was in Owen's room reading to him and she came in his room putting an Always pad in her underwear. You never know what she'll do next.

A Chloe memory

When Chloe was little my grandma brought her a little gift. I think it was for her birthday. Grandma tends to give an odd mix of gifts. One thing in the gift bag was a plastic bowl. Chloe lifted it out and said in an excited voice, "She got me an offering plate!". We still call that bowl the offering plate. She was getting it out the other day and I took her picture with it so I could remember her saying that.

I'm not sure exactly how old Chloe was when she got the offering plate, but probably around Owen's age. Here she is when she was 5:

How time flies!

New Kid

A conversation yesterday evening with Owen:

O: We have a new kid in our class.

Me: You do? What's their name?

O: It's name is Brianna. Another Brianna.

Me: Is she a nice girl?

O: Yep, she's pretty good. She hasn't hurt anyone.

Me: Well, that's good.

O: She's pretty cute too.

Phoeber Weeber

Phoebe was so sweet yesterday and said so many sweet things I can't remember. When we were eating breakfast she pushed her sleeves up because I always push her sleeves up when she eats. After a minute she said "See my sleeves pushed up like this? Push yours up". So I did and she said "Great, Mommy!".

Yesterday evening she wanted to eat some chips and salsa with Chloe. She ate a little bit and then ran to the bathroom. Danny went to check on her and she was brushing her teeth. He asked her why she was doing that and she said, "My teeth are hot". The salsa was mild, but too hot for her I guess.

She is Miss Independent all the time and wants to do everything herself. She alway says "I can do it. I a big girl!". She insists on dressing herself, putting on her shoes, putting on her coat, buckling her seatbelt, etc. Totally the opposite of Owen who would still like me to do all those things for him.

She looks at things in catalogs, or at the store when the others aren't with us, and will say, "Chloe will like that, won't she?" or "Owen would like that, wouldn't he?".

She was eating soup with me over the weekend and it was different soup than we normally eat (Progesso Vegetable Barley). She was eating it and liking it but she got a piece of celery on her spoon and said "What's this on my spoon?". I told her celery and she just said "Oh" and ate it. She did that again with a piece of tomato.

She has to kiss and hug everyone before she goes to sleep and before someone leaves. If after the kiss someone forgets, she says, "And a hug!". I'll take lots of those sweet kisses and hugs!

Merry Maid

Phoebe got tons of toys for Christmas. While she plays with them and seems to enjoy them all, she always goes back to this:

I got this little sweeper for Christmas. Phoebe loves it. She gets it out all the time. We'll be in the other room and hear the sweeper start up and we'll all kind of roll our eyes and say she's at it again.

Another Phoebe funny, today in the van she was fussing and I asked what was wrong and she said she couldn't get her leg sleeve up. When I looked back at her, she was trying to pull her leggings up.

The Santa threat

We've been using the Santa threat around here. Bad maybe, but it helps sometimes. First to explain, we fixed shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, where you fill a shoebox with goodies for a child somewhere in the world that doesn't have much. We do it every year and I love it. I collect them at church too, and drop them off at a drop off site that delivers them to the headquarters. Then the boxes are distributed around the world to needy children. So when we did our boxes this year the kids helped and I told them we were sending the toys and things to kids who didn't get anything for Christmas. SO, tonight I went in Owen's room and it was a wreck. I told him if he didn't pick it up Santa wouldn't bring any more toys. He said "Well, I guess I'll be a shoebox boy". Then later I was in the kitchen and he came to get me to show me a surprise. He led me to his room that he had cleaned up. That Santa is so darn helpful.

Some kind of trouble

(Some kind of trouble, who sings that country song?)

Phoebe was helping me do laundry this morning. She was pushing the laundry basket to me and it got stuck on the rug. She couldn't push it any farther. She said, "I'm having some trouble here". That so cracked me up.

Speaking of trouble, here she is this morning. She got into Chloe's makeup. As soon as I noticed she was quiet and went to check on her, I opened the door (she shut it so I wouldn't see her) and she said "I wear makeup. I'm sorry.". Everytime she gets into makeup she always puts it on her forehead. In the pictures I took she kept closing her eyes, I guess to show off the awesome eyeshadow.

Phoebe funnies

I think I've been shopping from QVC a little too much. Phoebe was saying her alphabet yesterday and said "....LMNOPQVC".

This morning she was helping me make lasagna and she kept eating the cheese. I said something like she was a rat eating cheese. She said "No, I'm Phoebe". She did the same thing to Danny the other day when he called her a cute little name.

A little while ago she put on Owen's cape and took off running and said "Super Baby!". (I think because on Dora today the map is wearing a cape and being Super Map. She only watches tv in passing but she must pay more attention to it than I think.)

When she uses the potty I will say "good girl". Lately when I say it she says "Don't say that, mommy". I asked her what I should say and she said "Say good job". So now I say "good job" when she uses the potty. She hasn't worn a diaper all day and so far so good.

She sings Jingle Bells a lot lately. At the end she always says "hey!" twice, "Oh what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh. Hey! Hey!". Changes the whole song to hear that "hey hey" at the end. ;)

If I ask her how we'll do something she says "really fast".

She's also funny to hear fussing at the dog. She'll say "Bad Dog!" and mutter "mean dog" under her breath. She tells Molly she'll have to go outside. She told her she was going to hit her with her purse "really hard".

When she's playing in her basket of toys she'll pull one out and say "I was looking for that". Today she got out a Christmas story book with a nativity picture on the front and she said "I was looking for baby Jesus". In that book they show a little lamb sitting by the manger. She pointed to it and said "A poodle like Molly".

She's just hilarious, and so fun to have around. I think I'll keep her.

Where's the show?

Today we went to a Craft Show. When we pulled in the parking lot Owen asked where we were. I told him a craft show. He said, with excitement in his voice, "Great!! I can't wait to see the show!".

We didn't know it but there was a parade in town for Veteran's Day. We watched part of it and they threw some candy and the Fair Queen threw a few little princess sets. The kind from the dollar store with a little crown and wand. Owen got one. A little girl asked him if he could have it and he said no. We thought he'd give it to Phoebe. Oh no. He was very happy about it and said "I can't believe I got this Princess Kit". I loved that he called it a kit. We got in the van and he put the crown on and waved the wand around and said Abracadabra. His Daddy would be so proud.
